LET ME TELL YOU OUR LOVE STORY (4)...
(This very day, OUR gazes met each other for the first time...)
Do you remember Vancouver, in March 2005 ?
It is 8pm. I am sitting in front of my TV, in my cosy lounge, eating some salted crisps and caressing Felix, my kitten.
I look very captivated by what is going on the screen. Some american version of Big Brother?, the last DVD I borrowed from the library: "Peeping Tom"or "Rear Window"?...or some dirty pornographic movie with willy-nilly fornicating trio couples?
No.... I was actually looking at YOU... looking at ME.
###
During my trip in Vancouver, I found this tiny place with an interesting glass facade facing the busy street of Cordova Road (Vancouver, Canada), and I started to transform it into a fake lounge (with wallpaper, armchair, cat resting, lamp, flowers, clock, television...)
I dressed myself as an ordinary housewife (with a touch of the 60s), and decided to spent just a few hours in this place, reading, watching TV programs (but faking it), playing with my cat, or feeding Minah, the parrot...
After covering the facade of this place with a drawing of a fake brick wall, so that nobody from outside could see me, I cut a rectangular hole in it and transformed it into a window by putting up curtains. I then put a TV screen in the window, facing
the street.
The TV was linked to a video camera inside the room, recording me in my routine
activities, so that the passer-by (YOU) looking at the TV screen could see me sitting in my lounge, as if YOU were looking through the window of a private house. As for me, I was able to see YOU on a second TV console placed inside the room and linked to a video camera facing and recording the street.
YOU were initially unaware that the person YOU were watching on the window/screen was actually standing behind the fake brick wall, before suddenly understanding that YOU were being watched by this person.
And for those who still didn’t understand the trick, a mirror, hung on the wall inside the room and facing my TV screen (on which I could see your faces looking at me), reflected your image.
This day, YOU, voyeur of a spectacle, suddenly became a spectacle yourself. In other words : you experienced the ‘look back’.

And from there I had the idea to design the opener of a Reality TV show that I called : TRLS or The Red Line Show
Press the start button in the bottom left corner of the movie screen, and press it again, so that you can leave the movie downloading while I explain you how this show would work :
The Red Line Show is a TV reality show whose dynamism is lead by a red line.
It is a completely new show concept, an interactive way of watching the news on digital TV, and a more entertaining way of presenting them.
The opener
The opener of TRLS is what I would call a"street-tease", a short sequence shoot in the street and aiming at araising spectator's curiosity.
From the start of this sequence, the show establishes a special relationship between the viewer and the screen :
The spectator, from his private indoor space (let's say his lounge), is watching the street passers-by.
And in the same way, the passers-by, from their public street space, are looking at the spectator.
So the 2 entities look at each other (they are both viewer and viewed), while a red line is slowly crossing the bottom of the TV screen.
The show
As I said, the show works according to a red line that divides the TV screens in two parts.
There are 4 possible divisions :
- Vertical division
- Horizontale division
- Corner division
- Full screen
The spectator, thanks to a special remote control, is able to change from one setting to the other one.
When the screen is divided into 2 parts, 2 scenes appear :
- On one side of the screen, you can watch the "real news".
- On the other side, you can watch a kind of sitcom or TV reality and follow the everyday life of a character : while watching at the same time than you the same 'real news' in his lounge, commenting then, or leaving his sit to go and prepare his dinner in the kitchen, or to use the bathroom.
Where is reality ? Where is fiction ?
The red line works as a border between both.
It could be either on the right of the screen, its left, or in the spectator's lounge.
Un peu comme certains dessins d'Escher... la curiosité voyeuriste n'est plus un vilain défaut, mais un mouvement continu ou le fameux ruban à une face...
Super piège Laetitia
Je me serai fait prendre...
Bravo !
Finally a reality show that is real. Finally a reality show I like. (I'm so bored with those on the Italian TV stations... well, not that they are woth being watched)
